A plant-based, forage-focused detox blend for horses

Balance Your Horse’s Hormones and Detoxify the Body Naturally

For millennia, humans have looked to the natural world around them for the very food sources they need - whether for nourishment or healing. Horses are no different. Given the ability to forage, horses will pick and choose plants that best provide the nutrients needed, or that can functionally assist with their ailments.

Hedgerow contains 6 plants which humans have used to aid in cleansing and detoxifying the organs, supporting the function of the endocrine and lymphatic systems, balancing hormones, reducing inflammation and pain, and managing stress and anxiety. This powerful supplement contains chamomile flowers, cleavers, burdock root, licorice root, dandelion root, and raspberry leaves, with no additives, preservatives, fillers, binders, or flavour enhancers.

Horses instinctively know what they need. They can’t talk to us, but they can teach us. We just have to pay attention.

Hedgerow is not intended to be fed consistently. For best results, feed for 2-3 months at a time. Contains ingredients that are not approved for FEI, AQHA, or USEF Competition.

Is hedgerow Right For My Horse?

No one knows your horse better than you, but often, interpreting their symptoms can be challenging.

Is your horse:

  • Moody or emotional? Mares get moody, particularly when cycling, but geldings can also be emotional (this may be a hormone imbalance or an inability to manage stressful situations)

  • Just not quite right? You can tell they don’t feel well but can’t put your finger on it. (this may be toxin build-up, as a result of disease, medications, drug reaction, surgery, or major changes in their world)

  • Stressed or continually anxious? (stress can cause gut issues, inflammation, and other issues in the body)

Are you seeing any of these signs?

  • Chronic skin problems, including melanoma

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Coughing or poor respiratory health

  • Wind galls, and chronically stocked-up legs

Maybe you need help with:

  • Cushing’s/PPID

  • Allergy and general immune system support

  • Tying up/excess muscle tension

  • Fertility support in breeding horses

Hedgerow may be the supplement your horse has been looking for.

How does it work?

Hedgerow is a blend of carefully chosen natural forage plants, each having a deep history of herbal healing. While each plant boasts its own list of strengths and health benefits, we believe that combining these properties and benefits in Hedgerow creates a powerful supplement. Aligning with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ingredients in Hedgerow work in the following ways:

  • Chamomile is a soothing herb known to promote relaxation while calming anxiety.

  • Cleavers (or ‘Clivers’) are commonly used to support/stimulate the lymphatic system to help reduce swelling. Cleavers are also powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents, particularly for respiratory infections.

  • Licorice root is known for its antibacterial properties. It is a strong adaptogen and expectorant, among other things.

  • Dandelion root is an expert cleanser - it aids in cleansing the blood, kidneys, and liver.

  • Burdock root is a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps remove excess hormones.

  • Raspberry leaf is often used in place of hormone therapy.

For hundreds of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors have used plants and herbs to treat numerous ailments and for their overall health benefits. Herbal treatments are currently used in the UK and AUS for Equine health. Research studies have been conducted on the use of herbal treatments for humans and other animals.

WHAT’S IN THE BUCKET?

Forget those plain brown pellets you’re used to feeding. What’s in those anyway?

With Hedgerow, you’ll see the plants - petals, leaves, stems and pieces of roots, all in a dried form. There are no additives, preservatives, or flavour enhancers - just 6 human-grade ingredients which you can even steep into a tea for your own consumption!

Your package comes with a 100mL scoop. One bucket contains a 75-day supply for a 500kg (1100lbs) horse fed at 1 scoop twice daily.

We recommend adding Hedgerow as a top dress to your horse’s regular feed.

We keep talking about the ‘systems’ in the horse’s body. But what are they all about?

The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is one of the major regulatory systems in the horse's body which is responsible for producing, releasing, and regulating hormones. The endocrine system in horses includes several key glands, such as the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, and gonads (testes or ovaries). Each gland produces specific hormones that have different functions in the body, including controlling the horse's metabolism, growth and development, reproduction, and response to stress.

The Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system in horses is a complex network of vessels, nodes, and organs that work together to help maintain the horse's health and well-being. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport and filter lymphatic fluid, a clear fluid that carries white blood cells, nutrients, and waste products, throughout the body, and is critical for maintaining the horse’s immune system and keeping them healthy.

We’re Horse People, and We’ve Been There Too!

THE BACKSTORY ON HEDGEROW

Our mare, Suzie, developed a series of uterine infections - strange, as she was a maiden mare. Ultimately, we learned that during her cycles, the follicle wasn’t able to pass and then became infected. Each time, the treatment usually involved sedation and antibiotics. Lots of antibiotics.

After several go-rounds of this, Suzie became dull and listless. You could just tell she didn’t feel good. Sandi, the researcher, was continually looking for ways to make Suzie more comfortable and help her reproductive system function correctly. We also knew that her body definitely needed to detox after the multiple rounds of antibiotics.

REMEMBER THE HEDGEROWS?

Sandi recalled her days as a working student in England, where horses were out on pasture in multiple fields separated by hedgerows. Typically built of a wide variety of wild-growing and intentionally selected plants, these “natural fences” were full of wildflowers, berries, small deciduous trees, and plants that, by today’s standards, would be considered weeds.

Very often, Sandi would see the horses grazing on the hedgerows.  Why, when surrounded by lush grass, would horses choose to eat from these hedgerows? Clearly, they knew what they needed to help with pain, imbalances, and other ailments.

Suffice it to say, Suzie was our first Hedgerow tester. Almost immediately after starting the Hedgerow formula, she brightened up and became more like her old self. More surprisingly - after three months on Hedgerow, her ACTH levels had come down to the point we could decrease her Pracend (pergolide) dose!

G ADDS HIS STAMP OF APPROVAL TO HEDGEROW

As Suzie’s health and attitude improved, it was a no-brainer to offer it to the “old man”, G!  Diagnosed with PPID/Cushing’s disease at 18, after being on Hedgerow for about a year, G’s ACTH levels have come down, and he is no longer on Pracend! At 25, he runs around like a youngster again and looks better than ever!

Maybe it’s a fluke? Maybe it’s Hedgerow! We will keep you updated!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Each pail of Hedgerow contains a 75-day supply for a 500kg (1100 lbs) horse.

  • For a mature horse over 225kg (500lbs), they should be fed one scoop of Hedgerow twice per day.

For a mature horse under 225kg (500lbs), they should be fed half of a scoop of Hedgerow twice per day.

  • The answer depends on your sport. Some sports have few or no rules around drugs and supplementation. But others are very strict. For example, dressage, reining, and show-jumping are sanctioned by organizations that do not approve of some of the ingredients in Hedgerow.

If you compete in FEI, AQHA, USEF, or EC-sanctioned events, we advise waiting until your show season is over for the year to feed Hedgerow. You could also feed it for 2-3 months in the early spring before your season begins; just be sure to allow time for the ingredients to be eliminated from the body.

  • No.

  • Absolutely! Please let your veterinarian know that we are here and very willing to speak with him or her about Hedgerow or any of our other products!

  • Hedgerow is most effective when not fed continuously, so we suggest offering it for 2-3 months at a time and then giving them a break.

  • No. Pregnant and nursing mares should not eat licorice root.

  • Give us a call, and let’s talk. There may be other factors affecting your results and we will happily take the time to help you figure out what those could be.

  • If you have a fussy horse, please consider the trial size first. If you have already purchased a full-sized tub and are struggling with feeding it, let us know, and we will help troubleshoot. Most horses absolutely love their Hedgerow, even the fussy ones!

  • You can feed whatever you like (within reason, of course)! Hedgerow has no known negative interactions with other supplements. We do recommend that you not feed more than is necessary. If you’re unsure, please contact us, or consult your veterinarian.

  • Yep! We don’t believe in adding any fillers, binders, preservatives, or anything else. We use only human-grade and non-GMO ingredients, which will actually help your horse.

  • Ideally, you should be feeding twice per day. We did not trial Hedgerow in a once-per-day feeding scenario, so we can’t advise if it will be as beneficial to your horse as feeding twice per day.

  • You should always be working with your vet regarding your horse’s health. If your vet would like more information about Hedgerow, we’d be happy to talk to him or her.

  • We do not recommend feeding Hedgerow for Horses to your dog.

  • You sure can! Just steep it like any loose tea, and drink it. All of our ingredients are human-grade, and the ingredients in Hedgerow are actually commonly found in tea.

Complementary Products

Spirulina

WIRX

“Gyps is a 17 yr OTTB who has always been a tricky case to manage through transition seasons as he's not a fan of weather swings or extremes. After surviving severe colitis 4.5 years ago, he was transitioned to an organic & forage first diet with herbal support and remedies as needed to find harmony in the gut, mind & body through the seasons.

We started our trial with G's Hedgerow 5 weeks ago and stopped all other gemmos & herbs so we could assess the synergy effect of this blend…and we are both very happy!

He's shedding out well, maintaining weight (even with this crazy ON spring weather), and only showed a little bit of GI & emotional stress, which tied in with a major weather event & my absence for a week - but much less of an event compared to some in the past!

Having the ability to use this blend seasonally (topping up herbs or adding others as needed) will save so much time & money. It's in a lovely ratio for using it for most of my client cases needing immune, lymphatic, or organ support through seasons of life or illness as well - without them having to purchase and weigh out a bunch of herbs at home!

It’s safe to say this product will be in my primary rotation at home & a go-to for many client cases.”
